Enduring Like Christ || 1 Peter 2:17-25

April 9, 2026

Life does not always feel fair. Some days we are misunderstood, accused of things we did not do, or judged by people who do not really know us. It is easy to want to fight back or shut down when that happens. But 1 Peter 2:17-25 gives us a different view, one where Jesus’ response to suffering was not anger or defense, but quiet strength.

This part of Scripture helps us see what it means to endure like Christ. He was treated unfairly, yet He chose love over hate and trust over fear. Spring in Hilton Head brings a change in the air, warmer skies, bright greens, and a fresh sense that growth is possible. Maybe the same can happen inside us too. We may not be able to escape stress or hard seasons, but with God’s help, we can respond differently. At Christian Renewal Church, Sunday morning gatherings help us encounter God’s presence through authentic worship and practical teaching, and the real work continues when we carry these truths into our daily lives.

What It Means to Show Respect and Fear God

This is not always easy. Verse 17 starts with something simple but powerful: “Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.” That can feel daunting when people disappoint us or treat us unfairly.

  • Respect does not mean we agree with everything people say or do. It means we choose love and kindness over reactiveness and judgment.
  • Fearing God is not about being scared. It is about caring more about what He thinks than chasing approval or control.
  • In families and marriages, this mindset helps us respond with patience and grace when tensions rise.

When we teach our kids or talk with others, it is tempting to point out only what is wrong. Respect invites us to lead with love instead. Not because everything is fine, but because God gives us what we need to treat people differently, even when it is hard.

Following Jesus When It’s Hard

Jesus did not deserve the pain He suffered. He was insulted, attacked, and yet He stayed quiet and trusted God with the outcome. That is what verse 23 reminds us of: “When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate... instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.”

Sometimes life hands us things we did not ask for. Maybe a friend turns on us, a boss treats us unfairly, or life just feels harder than it should. The natural reaction is to push back or silence the pain, but Jesus shows another way.

  • He knew that staying close to the Father mattered more than being proven right.
  • His example tells us we are not weak when we do not fight back. We are strong when we walk through pain with trust and peace.
  • When we choose quiet strength, we walk the same road He did, and He walks it with us.

This kind of faith might not come easy, but it grows stronger each time we practice it.

Living Out Love in Daily Life

Enduring like Christ is not just something we talk about at church. It shows up in daily life, when a coworker is rude, when a child talks back, or when we feel overlooked in our own homes. These are not just “small things.” They are places where God can shape us.

  • At work, choosing patience with a difficult boss can leave a lasting impact.
  • At home, responding with a calm heart instead of reacting in anger teaches our children how to handle conflict.
  • In our neighborhood, staying kind to people who ignore us or gossip behind our backs speaks volumes.

Love does not always mean agreeing. But it does mean holding back just long enough to pray, breathe, and do what Christ might do. Forgiveness is not about pretending we were not hurt. It is about choosing not to pass on the pain. And when we live like that, something starts to shift in us, and around us too.

Remembering Who Carries Our Pain

Sometimes we forget that Jesus did not just tell us how to live. He carried everything we would ever face. Verse 24 reminds us that “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross... by His wounds you have been healed.” That is not just a comforting idea. That is a truth we can stand on when everything else feels shaky.

When life weighs us down, we are not alone. Christ took our pain and made space for us to rest, breathe, and be held.

  • On days when nothing makes sense, we can talk to the One who understands every kind of suffering.
  • When we feel like we have to stay strong for others, we can admit that we are tired and trust Jesus to carry what we cannot.
  • There is strength that comes from knowing we were never meant to handle everything on our own.

As spring grows warmer here in Hilton Head, this season reminds us that healing and new life always come after hard winters, both outside and inside of us.

Shining Through Endurance

Enduring like Christ is not about pretending everything is fine. It is about choosing a different response when things get hard, honoring others, trusting God with outcomes, and living each day with quiet faith. It might not always draw attention, but it speaks loudly in a world that is often noisy and reactive.

When we learn to endure with love and trust, each moment, big or small, becomes a chance to show who we belong to. Not through perfect lives, but through hearts that reflect the love of Christ.

At Christian Renewal Church, we believe everyday moments provide powerful opportunities to walk in faith and show God’s love to others.
